Avalon Junior High School is currently the home to two Literacy classes. These classes are designed for students who, through specific testing, are found to be performing below their potential in language arts and possibly other academic areas. Students are expected to be motivated to improve their academic skills. It is believed that through small classes and specific strategy instruction, these students can make substantial gains.

If you were to visit our classes, at different times you may see individuals or small groups receiving instruction in word attack, comprehension strategies, writing techniques, or numeracy skills. Some students may be working with manipulatives while others are working independently in desks. At other times, the whole class may be doing an assignment or discussing subject specific knowledge.

The literacy students are integrated with their grade level peers for advisor period, physical education and options. They choose from the same options as all the other students and participate in Student Council, teams and clubs according to their areas of interest.
