Language Arts Print E-mail

This is a compulsory course for students in the French Immersion program.  The French language arts course focuses on the communication skills: reading, writing, listening, speaking and viewing while integrating the French culture.

Students will respond to various types of fiction and non-fiction literature, including short stories, novels, poetry, newspaper articles, and encyclopaedia excerpts.  Students will learn to read critically and to analyse what is read.  Classroom discussions, presentations, and group work will provide students with opportunities for listening to, speaking, and understanding the French language.

The learning of a second language is a cumulative process.  The student will develop, throughout three years of junior high, his or her capacity to think in both abstract and analytical terms within the realms of their second language.  With more sophisticated literature and ideas as sources, the student will learn to write and think in increasingly complex ways.

Evaluation of students’ work in French language arts is done through quizzes, tests, common exams, compositions, novel studies, participation, and oral presentations. To learn any language, it is absolutely essential that one practice speaking it!  For this reason, we ask that students speak French in all their immersion classes. To encourage them, 10% of each term mark is allocated to "French speaking in class.”  Students are also encouraged to spend time at home listening to and reading French.

Grade seven students will also have the opportunity to participate in a Cultural Day sponsored by Edmonton Public Schools, giving them a change to live and taste the French culture.  The cost of this event is $82.00.  Students will also have an opportunity to participate in a trip to Quebec.
