The language arts curriculum covers the six general areas of language development: reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and representing.

Students will encounter and respond to a variety of literary genres---both fiction and non-fiction---including short stories, novels, poetry, newspaper articles, and encyclopaedia excerpts.  Students will learn to read critically and to analyze what is read.  As well, each student will engage in a wide variety of writing styles including narrative, expository, and descriptive. Classroom discussions will provide students with opportunities for listening and speaking.

Since language arts learning is a cumulative process, the student will develop, throughout three years of junior high, the capacity to think in both abstract and analytical terms.  With more sophisticated literature and ideas as sources, the student will learn to think and write in increasingly complex ways.

Evaluation of students’ work in language arts is done through quizzes, tests, common exams, compositions (including poems, short stories, and research reports), oral presentations, representational (visual) assignments, and participation.
